The Importance of Regular Check-Ups

Prevention is the key to your pet's long-term health. If a health problem or issue can be detected in its early stages, it is much more likely to be resolved and treated with less difficulty, less expense and greater success.

Regular examinations are our chance to assess your pet's overall health, discuss any changes we observe, and educate and update you on advancements in medical care. We also welcome the opportunity to discuss any concerns or questions. We recommend annual wellness care for adult dogs and cats and may increase the recommendation to twice yearly for senior pets and pets with chronic illnesses.

When you bring your pet to Para Hills Veterinary Clinic, our veterinarians work with you to create a personalised lifetime preventive health care plan that considers your pet's age, breed, risk factors and lifestyle.

Your pet's annual wellness examination at our veterinary clinic may include the following:

  • Examine teeth, throat and oral cavity
  • Check vision and examine the eyes
  • Examine the ears for infection, ear mites, allergic reactions, and other related health issues.
  • Examine the respiratory system
  • Assess your pet's heart
  • Feel the Abdomen for size and shape of internal organs; liver, spleen, kidneys etc
  • Test your pet's reflexes
  • Palpate lymph nodes and abdomen
  • Inspect the skin
  • Palpate joints and muscles for arthritis and other orthopaedic conditions
  • Offer parasite testing and blood work

During each of your pet's examinations, we also consult with you regarding your concerns, answer your questions, and keep you up-to-date on all the information you need to be the best caregiver to your pet. Good communication ensures your beloved companion receives the optimal care and attention they deserve and need for a long, healthy life.

Preventative Health: Vaccinations

Vaccinations are the number one way you can protect your beloved pet from serious infectious diseases that were once responsible for the death of many dogs and cats. They prepare your pet for exposure to certain viruses and bacteria so the immune system can destroy the invaders before your pet's body becomes overwhelmed.

For people not wanting to vaccinate we recommend titre testing where we can check your pets blood to check their immune levels against the above diseases.

At the time of vaccinating we also suggest dogs receive a proheart injection to give a years prevention against Heartworm.

Vaccination FAQ

  • When Do I Need to Vaccinate?

Our veterinarians follow the guidelines recommended by the Australian Small Animal Veterinary Association and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association. The Core Vaccines are recommended to be given to all pets, whereas the Non-core will be given after the vet considers the pets lifestyle and risk. For instance in dogs in Adelaide we recommend the canine cough vaccines as well as the core vaccines, and in outdoor cats we alse recommend the FIV (AIDS) vaccine.

    Recommended Core Vaccines

Adult Dogs & Puppies: C3 (Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis)

Adult Cats & Kittens: F3 (Feline Panleukopenia, Feline Calicivirus, Feline Herpes Virus)

    Recommended Non-Core Vaccines

Adult Dogs & Puppies: Bordetella, Parainfluenza, and Heartworm Prophylaxis

Adult Cats & Kittens: Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)

    Other Available Non-Core Vaccines

    Feline Chlamydia, Tetanus

  • What if I don’t Vaccinate?

At Para Hills Veterinary Clinic, we offer titre testing as an alternative to routine vaccination for pets who have not been vaccinated or have an unknown vaccination history. A titre test is a simple blood test that measures the level of antibodies in the blood, indicating whether a pet is already immune to a specific virus or needs vaccination for protection. Our experienced veterinarians can help determine whether titre testing is suitable for your pet and create a personalised wellness plan that meets their unique needs. Contact us to learn more about our titre testing services at 08 8258 4838.

Desexing

All pets should be desexed unless you have put a lot of time and thought into breeding. We sterilise animals for many reasons. First and foremost, there are not enough homes in Australia for all the available pets; this results in about 50 dogs and about 50 cats being put to sleep in Adelaide alone daily. Every puppy or kitten you breed will use up one more home that could have saved a puppy or kitten already alive.

We also desex for behavioural reasons. Un-desexed male dogs are more prone to fight, urinate inappropriately, show aggression and wander. Un-desexed female dogs are more prone to wander and show unusual or out-of-character aggression when in heat. Un-desexed cats are more likely to spray urine, fight and wander. The cost of veterinary care is considerably higher in un-desexed animals due to injuries from wandering and fighting.

Lastly, we desex for health reasons such as preventing testicular and prostate problems in males and uterine infections and mammary cancers in females.

Microchipping

We've all seen the sad, lost pet notices posted throughout our neighbourhoods. When your pet gets lost, however, it's more than just an inconvenience: It's the number one cause of pet death. Studies have shown more than 10 million pets get lost each year, and approximately 90% of those found would not be returned to their owner if they hadn't had some form of permanent lost pet identification.

The team at Para Hills Veterinary Hospital considers microchipping a fundamental part of protecting your pet and an essential part of responsible pet ownership. Each microchip registers your pet with a unique identification number, filed in a national pet recovery database with your contact information. The contact information can be updated at any time, and it is important to remember to do so whenever your information changes.

Over the years, we have witnessed many pet parents successfully reunited with their beloved companion's thanks to microchips.

If your pet is lost, the microchip can be scanned by councils, RSPCA, animal shelters and vet clinics to reunite you with your pet, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. By microchipping your pet, you are also eligible for a discount on council registration, and certain councils require pets to have microchips. Check with your local council for regulations.

Microchips are safe, unalterable and permanent identification that lasts for your pet's lifetime. The entire implant procedure takes less than 10 seconds, and can be done at any age, even at birth!

Microchips can also be done in birds, rabbits, rats and ferrets, in fact any pet that you are wanting to find if they get lost!

Puppy & Kitten Care

Bringing a puppy or kitten home is a very exciting time for you and your family. Energetic and affectionate, they are a true source of joy.   Our doctors and the veterinary team at Para Hills Veterinary Clinic share your excitement. They are here to support you with individualised puppy and kitten wellness programs and home care guidance. Like human infants, puppies and kittens require special attention to grow and develop well. Your puppy or kitten's first year of care at our veterinary clinic will include the following:

Physical Examinations: Your puppy or kitten's lifetime of wellness starts with its first comprehensive physical exam. Puppies and kittens should have three exams between 8-16 weeks. These visits are essential because they allow our veterinarians to assess your pet's overall health, offer care and training advice, and discuss any concerns you may have. We also offer an additional check when you first get your new puppy (within the first week) to check for any congenital conditions that we can detect and to give advice on puppy care.

Vaccinations: Due to their developing immune systems, puppies and kittens must receive a series of properly staged vaccines at each early appointment. Each temporary vaccine lasts about a month, with the yearly vaccine given at or after 16 weeks of age when the immune system is old enough to mount a full immune response.

Diagnostic Testing: Puppies older than 12 weeks should be tested for Heartworm, and kittens older than 6 months may be tested for FIV.

Additional Recommendations: Your veterinarian will also discuss and recommend other services, such as desexing, microchipping, heartworm and flea control, and dental care.

To help you get started, we offer a special puppy or kitten pack filled with health care information, vouchers and samples. We also invite all our clients with puppies to attend a puppy preschool, which will help give you the basics of socialisation and health care.

Senior Pet Care

Your pet experiences a gradual reduction of their physical capabilities as they transition into their senior years, just as humans do. Para Hills Veterinary Clinic staff can help you manage this process through proper veterinary care, offering your beloved pet an extended period of vitality and good health. Additional care at this age may involve more frequent check ups to check the heart and blood tests to monitor and pick up on common age related conditions such as kidney and liver problems. Athritis is one of the most common problems afflicting older pets, and luckily there are many medications available that can keep them comfortable and active for longer!.

There is also an important role for you to play as your pet's primary caregiver. While you cannot control age-related decline, you can influence your pet's activity level, living conditions, access to quality senior veterinary care and daily nutrition. With help from your veterinarian at Para Hills Veterinary Clinic, you can manage these factors to prolong your pet's good health and vitality and increase their wellbeing, even as their pace slows.

Flea & Tick Prevention

Fleas and ticks are more than a nuisance; they carry diseases dangerous to you and your pet. The best course of action to protect both your pet and yourself from fleas, ticks and the problems they cause is prevention.

Fortunately, many safe, effective flea and tick control products for your dog or cat are available at Para Hills Veterinary Hospital. Our veterinary team will help you choose the correct preventive regimen based on your pet's risk factors and health status. Once a year, it is important to discuss with your veterinarian which external pest control products are ideal for your household based on the everyday life of your pet.

Heartworm Disease Prevention

Heartworm disease is a severe and life-threatening condition transmitted by mosquitoes. It affects dogs and, to a lesser extent, cats. To best protect your pet's health, our veterinarians recommend various highly effective preventatives; for dogs, we advocate annual injections that protect against Heartworm disease.

Exotic Pets

We offer optimum wellness care programs for rabbits, ferrets, mice, rats and guinea pigs. We can also treat the more straightforward problems of birds, reptiles and wildlife.

We have vets experienced in the more complex surgical needs of rabbits, rats , mice, guinea pigs and birds. We routinely desex lots of exotic species such as rabbits, rodents and wildlife such as kangaroos and possums!.

Since determining if an exotic pet is ill is often difficult, we strongly recommend routine physical examinations to check for health problems and nutritional and husbandry-related conditions.

To survive attacks from predators, exotic pets usually conceal their illnesses in the wild. As a result, their medical problems often go unnoticed for long periods. By the time you recognise, there is a problem, the condition is often extremely serious. Regular medical examinations by a veterinarian at Para Hills Veterinary Clinic often diagnose issues before they become severe medical conditions.
