Puppy preschool is one of the kindest things you can do for a new dog. In four short weeks, your puppy learns to meet other dogs, greet new people and take the sights, sounds and smells of the world in their stride. Our puppy preschool classes in Para Hills give pups from right across Northeast Adelaide a happy, confident start, guided by qualified veterinary nurses who love watching them grow.
Puppies who attend preschool behave differently as they grow up. They have learnt how to socialise and interact with dogs of all shapes and sizes, how to read another dog’s body language, how to start a game, and how to feel safe instead of frightened. They also discover early on that the vet clinic is a friendly, exciting place to be, and that lesson stays with them for life.
Para Hills Veterinary Clinic has cared for local families for more than 50 years, and puppy preschool is one of the parts of our week we look forward to most. It is where lifelong friendships between pets, owners and our nurses begin.
Puppy preschool works best during the imprinting phase of a dog’s life, when their brain is like a sponge and early memories are stored in the permanent part of their mind. That is why we run classes when pups are 8 to 12 weeks old, and sometimes up to 16 weeks. During this window, the sights, sounds and smells a puppy meets are absorbed into their long-term memory. If a puppy has a friendly, pleasant meeting with a big black dog at 8 weeks, then does not meet another big black dog for 10 years, their memory still tells them that big black dogs are calm and friendly, so they respond in kind. Getting these early experiences right is what good puppy socialisation depends on, and the RSPCA explains why early socialisation matters so much.
We believe puppy preschool should be run in small groups. Small classes let our nurses keep a close eye on every puppy and every interaction, so the experience stays happy for all of them. Our nurses gently encourage the shy pups to come out of their shell, and make sure the boldest pups are playing in a friendly, polite way. That way no puppy gets overwhelmed, and no puppy gets to practise pushing others around.
The best part of running puppy preschool inside a vet clinic is the happy memories your pet makes here. When they come back for desexing or any other visit, they arrive somewhere familiar and calm. If they are ever unwell or need to stay with us, they settle more easily because they know our team, our smells and our sounds. Our nurses adore it too, and often follow their little preschoolers right through life, catching up with them at every visit. Every class is run by veterinary nurses who have completed extra training in puppy development and teaching, using plenty of positive reinforcement so the pups look forward to coming each week.
Puppies begin their obedience journey in preschool, getting a head start on sit, stay, drop and recall. Think of these as the house manners that make a dog a welcome member of the family. Everyone loves an adult dog that trots over and sits politely at their feet, and far fewer enjoy one that barrels in and jumps all over them. More than anything, puppies want to please the people they love, and preschool shows them how. It lays the foundation for a wonderful relationship between a dog and their person.
Alongside social skills, our classes cover the practical care that keeps a dog healthy and happy at home. We show you how to trim nails, brush teeth and start good grooming habits early, and we talk through toilet training and everyday nutrition. One whole session is dedicated to pet first aid, so you feel prepared if your dog ever has a mishap. Good dental habits started young can save a lot of trouble later, and you can read more about caring for your pet’s teeth on our pet dental care page.
Some puppies need a little more support. They might struggle with toilet training or play biting, or be especially shy or especially confident. Whatever the hurdle, our nurses are always happy to offer extra advice, including some one on one time with your puppy preschool nurse to work through it at their own pace.
To keep every pup safe, all puppies need to be healthy and to have had their first or temporary vaccination before starting. Classes are ideally for pups aged 8 to 12 weeks, though we sometimes run a slightly older class as well. We keep the age groups separate, because pups of different ages are at different mental stages, and mixing them would be a bit like sitting a teenager in a class of toddlers. Our puppy classes run in the evenings so owners can come along after work, once a week for four weeks. You do not need to be a Para Hills Vet client to come along, and we welcome pups from Salisbury, Mawson Lakes, Ingle Farm, Wynn Vale, Golden Grove and Modbury, and sometimes from further afield like Elizabeth and Ridgehaven.
Para Hills Veterinary Clinic is a family-owned practice that has cared for the local community for more than 50 years, with a team of 7 veterinarians and 18 nurses. Many of the pups who start with us at preschool are still visiting years later, and some of their owners first came to us as children with their own family pet. As a locally owned clinic, we get to know your dog as an individual, from their first wobbly weeks right through to their senior years.
If you would like to give your puppy a confident, happy start in life, we would love to help. Call our friendly nurses on (08) 8258 4838 to ask about the next available class, or book an appointment online. You will find us at 523 Bridge Rd, Para Hills, and you can learn more on our puppy preschool page.
We run classes for pups aged 8 to 12 weeks, and sometimes up to 16 weeks, because this is the key imprinting window when early experiences shape a dog for life. We keep age groups separate so every pup learns alongside others at a similar stage.
Yes. To keep all the pups safe, every puppy needs to be healthy and to have had their first or temporary vaccination before joining a class. If you are not sure where your puppy is up to, give us a call and we can check.
Classes run once a week for four weeks, in the evenings so you can come along after work. Each session builds on the last, covering socialisation, basic obedience and practical care at home.
Of course. We welcome puppies from every clinic, not just our own, with pups coming from Para Hills, Salisbury, Mawson Lakes, Ingle Farm, Golden Grove and further afield. You do not need to be a registered client to enrol.
Your puppy will get plenty of puppy socialisation with other dogs and people, make a start on sit, stay, drop and recall, and get used to being handled for nails, teeth and grooming. We also cover toilet training, nutrition and a session on pet first aid.
That is common and nothing to worry about. Our nurses encourage shy pups to come out of their shell and steer bold or mouthy ones towards polite play, and we are always happy to offer extra one on one advice for pups who need a little more support.
