Microchips for Pets in SAMicrochipping for Your Pet

We've all seen the sad lost pet notices posted throughout our neighbourhoods. When your pet gets lost, however, it's more than just an inconvenience: It's the number one cause of pet death. Studies have shown more than 10 million pets get lost each year and approximately 90% of those found would not be returned to their owner if they hadn't had some form of permanent lost pet identification.

The team at Para Hills Veterinary Hospital considers microchipping a fundamental part of protecting your pet and an important part of responsible pet ownership. Each microchip registers your pet with a unique identification number, which is filed in a national pet recovery database with your contact information. The contact information can be updated any time, and it is important to remember to do so whenever your information changes.

Over the years, we have witnessed many pet parents successfully reunited with their beloved companions thanks to microchips. One such success story involves a cat that was trapped by a council program targeting feral cats living under a bridge. The cat was later found to have a microchip. Saved from being euthanized, the cat was returned to its happy owner five years after it went missing!

If your pet is lost, the microchip can be scanned by a councils, RSPCA, animal shelters and vet clinics to reunite you with your pet, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. By microchipping your pet, you are also eligible for a discount on council registration and certain councils require pets have microchips. Check with your local council for regulations.

Microchips are safe, unalterable and permanent identification that lasts for your pet's lifetime. The entire implant procedure takes less than 10 seconds.

House Calls

To provide you with the most comprehensive veterinary care possible, our veterinary team also offers house calls on a case-by-case basis. To put it simply: there are times when it is best that you and your pet remain at home, where you both are most relaxed and comfortable, and we come to you.

Services we can provide include wellness examinations, vaccinations, routine medical care, blood draws, and sick visits including examination and preliminary diagnostics. Certainly the most difficult, though most important, house call we make is when a beloved pet has reached his or her last day. Being at home, surrounded by loving and familiar faces, is a comfort to you and your pet and an important aspect of our veterinary services.

End-of-Life Planning

For many pet owners, even thinking about their pet's final days is difficult and emotional. Our pets are a part of our family. It is this strong bond, born from years of loyal companionship, that makes this time particularly hard to bear.

We encourage you to talk with our veterinary healthcare team about these issues before they become an urgent matter. Find out about your options, including our crematory services, make some key decisions ahead of time and ask us to add this information to your pet's record. Taking the time to plan, as challenging as it may be, will lessen the pain and stress for you and your pet.

All of us at Para Hills Veterinary Clinic will do our best to help you prepare for these important issues with the compassion and sensitivity they require. Before you struggle through one more day with a sick, elderly, or terminally ill pet that is suffering, call us to learn how we can help.
